What is Fashion?

What is Fashion?

A long time ago, my answer would be adding pretty clothes, gorgeous accessories, beautiful make up to create the trendiest look. That definition is not necessarily wrong, however it is superficial.

Once upon a summer, I took a leap and attended a workshop called “Contemporary Fashion Media Styling”. As cliché as it sounds, it changed everything I knew about fashion.

On the first day, my teacher presented to us the glamorous world of fashion. Contrary to popular belief, not everyone has to be in design to live in the fashion industry. The fashion industry encompasses the design, media, retailing, business, as well as marketing. Each plays a significant role in bringing fashion into the modern age (more in this in a future post).

Take Diana Vreeland and Guy Bourdin for instance.

Diana Vreeland is a fashion legend at Harpers Bazaar and Vogue, as she wittingly created a cultural shift in the fashion media. Instead of simply writing about trends and style, she took the opportunity to give fashion a conceptual dimension, by inspiring and popularize ideas, such as celebrating freedom during postwar era. Being interested in people more than clothes, Vreeland had excelled in nurturing the careers of many fashion icons – Diane Von Furstenberg, Manolo Blahnik, Twiggy – by embracing their unique traits. She was a true visionary, with an enthralling ability to think “outside the box”, to give fantasy to women.

Guy Bourdin, on the other hand, was a fashion photographer known for his provocative images, that revolutionized the genre of fashion photography of today.

Think of the type of imagery that we find appealing in fashion media now. The composition, make-up and vibe are all influenced by what he pioneered in his career.

What is most fascinating is how his pictures can evoke such diverse emotions out of different individuals. While my husband has deep admiration for his work, I can’t help but feel a strong sense of agitation, but we both agree his pictures are captivating.

Upon learning about their groundbreaking approach to the industry, the way I experience fashion has forever been changed. In turn, it has ignited my hunger for inspiration, knowledge and discovery about fashion beyond clothing. My name is Jeera, and welcome to my blog.
