Modest fashion is a global fashion movement that has become a phenomenon, that is about dressing to conceal while still revealing your personality and style, and has commonly been embraced by (but not limited to) muslim women.
THE DAWN OF MODEST FASHION
The phenomenon started ever since Dolce and Gabana produced a line of luxurious hijab and abaya earlier last year. At the beginning it created a lot of uproar and criticism with buzzwords like misappropriation, white-washing and hypocritical.
However, they have also set in motion a huge trend, that has been followed up by several brands such as nike’s sports hijab, Uniqlo’s collaboration with Hana Tajima, fast fashion brands like H&M and Mango introducing flowy dresses and loose-fitting pants for Ramadan.
THE INDUSTRY ARE GROWING TO EMBRACE AND CELEBRATE PEOPLE OF ALL BACKGROUND.
One of the most talked moment in Fashion was when Halima Aden stepped out on Kanye West show the biggest. She had also made history by the first ever women to wear hijab for the MISS USA competition. She is for sure on a mission to challenge stereotypes on fashion, Fashion is meant for all kind of people, including muslim women like her.
People may assume that this is just an industry taking advantage of the muslim community, however the middle east has always been a big contributing market segment for high fashion brands, This is also a sign that the fashion industry is seeking to be inclusive, blurring the boundaries that separate us, by producing clothes that is suitable for people of diverse culture and religion.
MORE WOMEN EMBRACING THE MODEST FASHION MOVEMENT SHOWS A SIGN OF FEMALE EMPOWERMENT
The modern muslim woman is far more educated and independent, and we seek knowledge and understanding of the Islamic way of life ourselves, through the Quran. As knowledge is liberation, women are growing confidence in expressing their individuality and personality while maintaining and showcasing the beauty of their faith.
I would love to talk more about that, and how this is a reflection of the current mood of female empowerment.
